Finding Balance

It‘s interesting how some people are constantly trying to discover ways to bring balance to their lives while others seem to be in total control. Over the years I’ve learned three valuable steps in maintaining balance to achieve maximum results with the least amount of stress.
  1. Know your priorities. People often think they know exactly what these are and when asked, can even name them in specific order. When I ask a client to keep a record for just one week and log how they were using their time, they realized their priorities often didn’t equal their intentions. They had their loved ones as their highest priority, but soon realized they were spending the majority of their time -- and focus -- on their work.
  2. Create a plan with specific goals. Know exactly what it is you want to accomplish in all areas of your life. Determine how you will accomplish this, what resources you will use and a measurable time frame for each of your goals. The secret to this step is taking the time to review your plan on a frequent basis to confirm that your priorities are in order and you are on target and not headed off course. Minor adjustments are easier to make and cause less stress than waiting until they become major corrections.
  3. Have the right attitude. This means having the determination to do what you want to do and not what you think others think you should be doing. It’s giving yourself permission to put “yourself” first and being totally guilt free when doing it. The better care you give yourself means increasing your quality to share others. When you are stressed and out of balance, you may be spreading yourself too thin in too many different areas in your life or you have placed too much emphasis in only one area. No one can give you a guilt trip better than you can give yourself. Shake it off, remain positive and stay focused on your end result.
Balance comes to those who follow these steps.
